What happens to people after they die?
The Saviour Jesus clearly taught that there are two destinations for all people after they die. Those who have taken refuge in the Saviour Jesus and have received his gift of new life, will be received into God’s own presence and dwelling place, forever. This is often known as “heaven”. There is no suffering, sickness, sin or death and this is a place of unending joy:
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”
Those who do not take refuge in the Saviour Jesus and live according to their own sinful ways will be judged and experience the unending suffering of life apart from God. This is sometimes called the “lake of fire” or “hell”. . Jesus describes this as:
The eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
Jesus says this is a place of unending suffering and torment where “the fire is not quenched.”
