Do Christians do good works in order to go to heaven?

No.  The good news of grace[21] provides a new motivation for believers in Jesus to do good works. They do good works not to improve themselves, not to gain God’s approval, not to receive salvation, but because they are filled with thankfulness and joy in their relationship with their Maker God and have a desire to express compassion for others.

The Bible’s teaching is clear that no person can get to heaven by doing good works. Christians do good works to express the life that God has given them. The Lord Jesus himself said:

‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’[22]

This is one of the main reasons Christians have engaged in educational, medical work, development and charitable work for many centuries. Some have done this out of great sacrifice to their own health and wealth.
